The Highwayman Inn is one of the "local" hotels that seems to have been around "forever", though it's buildings and interior are reasonably modern and continuously updated. I've been living in Orillia for over 30 years, and it's been here pretty much all that time.

Although it's location is not adjacent to any waterfront, it is ideally located for both vacationers and those passing by and only need a night's stay. Visible from Highway 11, it sits in a corner where the highway has exits and entrances to Orillia. Coming off Highway 11 onto Coldwater Road (Hwy 12) the Highwayman in remains visible, making it easy to find. It has an assortment of room types for all sorts of travelers, from the standard guest room (about 80 of those), to the Jacuzzi room, deluxe suites and even rooms designed to for the family to stay together in one space. The hotel features a very nice indoor pool, a hot tub and sauna and a games room. Outdoors, there are tennis courts (with lighting) and a pretty pond (often with ducks or geese) with a gazebo. Most (if not all) of the rooms have a balcony or patio (with chairs), and the rooms all open onto interior hallways.

Besides the guest rooms, there is an onsite restaurant (McCabes) and lounge - Sunday brunch at McCabe's is an excellent buffet. For those who live in the area...they also do Christmas Dinner (you need to book ahead). We've had our family dinners here for a few years now (buffet style) and we've never been disappointed. Good food, and lots of choice make it ideal for family groups. As well as the resaurant and lounge, the Highwayman Inn has numerous conference and meeting rooms, and has good banquet facilities for weddings or large groups. Some years ago, our church rented a banquet room for Sunday services, and always had the church Christmas Dinner in a banquet hall. On the whole, this facilitiy is well suited for almost any event, from weddings to meetings, family reunions or large conferences.

The Highwayman Inn hotel, Orillia
From a personal point of view, I can tell you that my sister and her family have stayed at the Highwayman Inn on a number of occasions while visiting Orillia, and they've had no complaints with their accommodations, and have found the staff on hand to be friendly and helpful.

Surrounded by Orillia's western shopping district means the Highwayman Inn is close to shops where a traveller can find almost anything in a hurry - adjacent to it is a large Shopper's Drug Mart and Tim Horton's, across the road is a Zehr's grocery, the Bank of Montreal, and a brand new (rather large) LCBO. Just across the overpass (about 3 minutes) is the Westridge Shopping area and the Walmart Super Center. There are fast food outlets (Harvey's inside Home Depot, A&W), restaurants (Montana's Road House, Boston Pizza) and places to buy things in a hurry (the dollar shop, Hallmark Cards, Payless Shoes, Bulk Barn (goodies & treats, including sugarless candy), Food Basic Grocers), and larger shops like Future Shop, Reitman's, Mark's Work Wearhouse, Payless Shoes & Pennington's. Even if you were only "spending the night" - you can find what you need within 3 or 4 minutes of the Highwayman Inn. Oh - and there is the Galaxy Movie Theatre right behind Home Depot if you feel like a film.

The Highwayman Inn Orillia

From this central location you can reach some of the nature areas within a 6 or 7 minute drive - Scout Valley, Bass Lake Provincial Park and the Langman Wildlife Sanctuary are places worth visiting if you like the outdoors and natural environments. In the opposite direction, a 6 or 7 minute drive will get you to Orillia's historic downtown shopping district, and the waterfront - Couchiching Beach Park, Centennial Park, Veteran's Park and the Port of Orillia.

Just a word for travelers - Orillia has many weekend events throughout the summer months, so if you plan to visit make sure you book your rooms early, or travel through the week if you have the option.
